About Pomegranate

✻

Pomegranate - The fruit of life

The word pomegranate is derived from the Latin words "pomum" (apple) and "granatus" (seeded). Cultivated in the Mediterranean region since ancient times, originally from Iran and the Himalayas. Delicious, juicy and jewel-like, pomegranate seeds are packed with vitamins, minerals and fibre. Quite desirable for its healthy antioxidant, anti-inflammatory qualities, helps to prevent diseases like Alzheimer or cancer, especially breast and prostate.

No wonder The pomegranate is a symbol representing fertility, abundance, and marriage. It is mentioned in the Bible and also appears in a beautiful myth about Persephone stolen away by Hades. Inconsolable at the loss of her daughter, the corn goddess Demeter prevented the earth from bearing fruit unless she saw her daughter again. Had Persephone not eaten pomegranate seeds while in the Underworld, we wouldn’t have had winters and summers now.

Pomegranate fruit also features in Atom Egoyan’s beautiful movie “Ararat”. It is a story about Armenian genocide, where one of the characters eats only one pomegranate seed a day and survives.

It is believed that every fruit has exactly 613 seeds. Good luck with counting.
